The tribe would receive 52000 dollars for operations from July 1 1977 to Sept 30 1978 mainly for feed fencing and related costs. The 41800 acre ranch can carry about 2000 sheep units equating to 400 cows. The action is part of a court ordered stock reduction after partitioning the land between the Navajo and Hopi tribes. Navajo stock owners may retain stock to full carrying capacity, Hopi stock owners may not. The Chambers ranch closed earlier this spring after losses and will charge 1.60 per month per animal unit. The ranch will serve stock of residents partitioned to the Hopis with stock pickup upon relocation.
AP reports in Moscow that Leonid Brezhnev, aged 70, becomes president while remaining general secretary, the first Soviet leader to hold both posts simultaneously. Podgorny retires after parliament approves his resignation, with Brezhnev’s succession seen as strengthening peace and cooperation.
AIM leader Russell Means claims the American Indian Movement is infiltrating tribal governments and government programs to protect Indian rights.
