Gallup Flag Day marks first hospital flag retirement ceremony

Sylvia Carlson reports on the Gallup Indian Medical Center hosting its first flag retirement ceremony attended by military and civilian onlookers. The event, organized by Dick Naumann and Dominick Aretino with Civil Air Patrol support, saw 20 flags burned in a controlled grate as Taps capped the ceremony.

Jury indicts two Idaho inmates for escape

Grand jurors indicted Ben Perez 31 and Martin Fernandez 23 for second degree felony escape from Cibola County Corrections Center after they scaled a razor wire fence and fled across an open field. They were spotted by workers and later captured by Milan police hiding under an abandoned trailer. An abandoned van with cash clothes and keys was found nearby.

Grants Police Nab Three Aggravated DWIs

Grants police arrested Linus Lewahe 32 of Bernalillo for aggravated driving while intoxicated and having an open container after responding to a Pizza Hut lot accident scene. Orlando Archande 29 of San Rafael was charged with aggravated DWI following a reckless High Street stop and probation violation. Darrell Yazzie 30 of Crownpoint faced aggravated DWI charges after a Tuesday afternoon incident. Police also charged Pete Thomas 26 with disorderly conduct and marijuana possession after a 911 call at Cordova apartment.

Gallup photographers plan 3500 mile Arctic ride

Milan Skelnar and Bill Liebersma, two Gallup photographers, will bicycle from near the Arctic Circle to Gallup starting in July. They expect 3,500 miles over six weeks, riding Canada through Montana Wyoming Colorado and New Mexico at 15 to 17 miles daily. They travel on back roads with few gas stations and no sponsors, using varied bikes and a See Gallup men plan bike, page 2 designation for details.

School boards seek hopefuls on Navajo Nation seats

WINDOW ROCK The Navajo Board of Election Supervisors seeks at least 51 candidates for one third of tribal school boards. The board voided the May 2 primary for Shiprock Alternative School due to erroneous enrollment figures and reopened filing until 5 p.m. June 23 based on corrected enrollments. The number of students per chapter dictates seats. Shiprock will gain two seats and Sheep Springs joins an at large seat with Lee School boards.
