Two Pedestrians Struck and Killed East of Grants

State police report two separate fatal pedestrian crashes near Grants. An 82-year-old New Laguna woman, Clara Encino, was struck on I-40 near Laguna by a San Antonio driver, Juan Jose Hernandez, and died at the scene. Alcohol not involved. A 35-year-old man, Willard James Garcia of Cubero, was killed in a hit and run on SR 124 near Budville. the vehicle, later recovered, left the scene with the driver unrecovered and Garcia was intoxicated per medical examiner.

Resolution protects burial sites and tribal tax talks

SHIPROCK AP The New Mexico Commission on Indian Affairs asks that when an Indian is buried the remains not be disturbed and burial sites be protected. A second resolution urges state inclusion of tribal governments in tax negotiations to end double taxation hindering self sufficiency.

Official busted sparks protest at Navajo Nation offices

Navajo Nation Legislative Advisor and Election Supervisor Robert Salabye was arrested for failing to appear in court on a battery charge, prompting a dispute over police procedures. Tribal officials say officers did not notify the supervisor or carry a warrant, and used three patrol vehicles to arrest Salabye at the legislative offices. Salabye was booked on a nonpayment of child support warrant, not the battery charge.

About 50 boxes and more than 5,000 documents on the Navajo Hopi relocation sit in the Office of Navajo and Hopi Indian Relocation in Flagstaff. Three people spent months organizing them and a user’s guide is available for researchers. Gallup High to Reward Positive Behavior for Grades and Attendance

Gallup High School will shift from punishment to positive reinforcement next year. Principal Joe Gill says the program rewards perfect attendance top grades and good behavior with perks like movie discounts free hamburgers and merchant coupons. The aim is to raise attendance and grades and prepare graduates for better jobs. 84 percent of last year’s 1050 suspensions were for attendance or tardiness. the rest for acts like fighting.
