A tiny Arizona group, the Peyote Way Church of God, sues Texas and the U.S. government seeking the right to use peyote in religious ceremonies. The Native American Church already holds federal permission. officials say Peyote Way is a sham. The dispute hinges on who can claim exemption and equal protection under the law.
Jackie Yazzie of Chinle Arizona died at 23 after a three year battle with primary pulmonary hypertension. She waited for a heart lung donor at the University of Arizona Medical Center in Tucson. The IHS funded the operation after a donor was found and Navajo Nation groups raised funds and held events to support her. Funeral arrangements appear on page 2.
Five officials were appointed to represent McKinley County on a city county committee to discuss sharing jail costs for prisoners held in Gallup. The panel will report to both governments with a joint meeting set for June 22. The county budget deadline is July 20 and the jail contract renewal is June 30.
President Reagan plans a 6 pm MDT nationwide address from the Oval Office to press a strengthened U S role in the Persian Gulf. He will outline security measures for U S ships, vow a public report to Congress, and discuss NATO talks after the Venice summit amid Iraq Iran war and Iran arms controversy.
