County divides annual revenue sharing funds

McKinley County Commissioners approved 436820 dollars in revenue sharing for the next fiscal year running July 1, 1985 to June 30, 1986 to ten organizations including Ramah Water and Sanitation Battered Families Gallup Area Arts Council and two Soil and Water districts. The board also set large grants for capital outlay 106188 and a rural addressing system 69624 using digital mapping to attach names to map locations.

Indians Back Drug Abuse Bill At Albuquerque Hearing

A congressional hearing in Albuquerque heard that habit forming drugs especially alcohol are killing Indian youth with up to 80 percent of those 10 or older involved in drinking or drugs. Testimony from Navajo, Acoma, Apache, Ute and Pueblo representatives urged funding to coordinate prevention and treatment, preferably directed to tribes rather than federal agencies.

Navajo protests BIA funding disparities in Albuquerque

Navajo representatives told U S lawmakers that the Bureau of Indian Affairs distributes funds unevenly among area offices. Statistics cited by tribal statistician Ron Faich show Billings, Portland and other offices receiving more per person than Navajo and Aberdeen areas, prompting support for a Fiscal Accountability Act to require annual and per area reporting of program funding.
