Strike May Shut Down Air Service Across Gallup

Coal mining eyed on Navajo land in New Mexico area

The Albuquerque District Office of the Bureau of Land Management says coal mining will heavily impact Navajo landowners in northwestern New Mexico. The draft environmental statement notes 26 coal lease applications cover 77,590 acres east of the Navajo Reservation, with livestock grazing as the primary existing use and 2,032 animal unit months of forage at risk. The plan could create about 4,870 mining related jobs but threaten gravesites sacred lands and paleontological sites.
