Police motorcycle dragged as car backs into scene in Gallup

Gallup police report Officer A J Calderon was injured when his motorcycle was dragged 13 feet after Carlos Zaragoza 67 rolled a station wagon in reverse following a traffic stop on West Aztec Avenue. The car struck poles and a Rice Motor Co. lot truck before the bike was pushed into a light pole. Damage exceeds $6000.

Gallup Council to weigh 911 number and new traffic fee

Gallup City Council meets at 7 30 p m to discuss tying police fire and ambulance into a single 911 number and a new $5 traffic violation fee to fund jail costs. Also on the agenda are a liquor license renewal for Red Rock State Park, injury leave for Capt Leyba, a revised $24.4 million budget, water project bids, and two travel requests for city staff.

Anaya names Tomada to ABC board

Gov Toney Anaya named Gary Tomada of Gallup to the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission to fill Veronica Perez’s term ending June 30. Abe Rodriguez was named permanent ABC director, replacing interim chief Albert Gonzales. Rodriguez heads the gaming division and is president of A Rodriguez and Associates. Gonzales becomes ABC chairman for one year. Lydia Gonzales and James Reeves were also appointed or reappointed to the five member panel.

Marsh agrees to guilty plea in agreement

Albert Marsh of Gallup pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy to distribute marijuana under a plea agreement that calls for dismissal of a related charge against his wife Devonne Marsh. Six other defendants face trial, with Marsh’s sentencing set after all trials conclude.

Hospital administrator selection due Monday

Gallup officials expect a final choice for the merged McKinley General and Rehoboth Christian Hospitals by Monday after interviewing finalists last week. The selected administrator would oversee the two facilities as a single unit, with start date likely mid July. About 90 resumes were received after months of advertising. The merger agreement between the two boards was signed May 30.

County backs Prewitt road projects for CAC funding

McKinley County commissioners picked two state CAC funding applications for 1983 84 to defend on County Road 19 near Prewitt. The $714 000 paving of four miles north of Plains Electric plant and a $459 000 12 mile road study from I 40 to the Borrego Pass area were prepared by McKinsey Area Council of Governments. BIA match would raise the road study to about $600 000.
