County to cut more staff in McKinley County operations

Gallup police arrest two after high speed motorcycle chase

Police in Gallup chased two men, Richard Baca and Bill Bustamante, at speeds over 100 mph after riding motorcycles without helmets on U.S. 66 near Gallup Sales Co. Bustamante faced multiple counts including reckless driving and elude. Baca was charged with elude, helmet and license offenses. Since Tuesday eight arrests and 59 detentions for protection were reported.

Tommy died of neglect after Navajo Court order

Tommy born in February died in May while in the care of his mother. Medical authorities suspect malnutrition from chronic neglect. Doctors and social workers knew of the danger before birth. Crownpoint Navajo Court ordered on May 8 that Tommy be placed with medical authorities, removing him from his alcoholic mother. He died at home less than two weeks later.

McKinley County Juvenile Detention Center Construction Begins

Construction on the McKinley County juvenile detention center will start Monday with Luther Construction Co. of Albuquerque on site. The project converts 2,800 square feet of the Public Safety Building into a juvenile detention facility, adding eight cells, dining and day room, booking area, visiting spaces, and jailer office. The contract, awarded May 23 for 235,971 dollars, is funded 25 percent by the county and 75 percent by the state and is planned to take 10 months due to equipment delivery delays.
