The Gallup Lions Club hosts the 18th annual Rodeo approved by the Rodeo Corporation of America with performances Friday and Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Activities include kiddie rides, a Western parade, dances, and a Western barbecue Saturday evening.
At Moscow polling stations Nikita Khrushchev aged 72 and Vyacheslav Molotov aged 76 voted for Kosygin as the Communist Party dominates a largely ceremonial election. Khrushchev noted illness but appeared healthy, while Molotov spoke of past roles and current writing. Over 99 percent turnout expected among 140 million eligible voters.
A four vehicle collision on U.S. 666 about 17.5 miles north of Gallup left Merlin Begay 46 dead and Manuel Begay 16 and Harry Belone Jr. 28 seriously injured. Police said a pickup driven by Mary Dennison struck the Begays as they stood in the road. no citations issued.
Ticket chair Matt Moretto reports heavy advance sales for this year’s Ceremonial. He notes the Saturday night center box seats nearly sold out as anticipation builds for a record travel year and a large turnout for the Soil Conservation Association convention in Albuquerque. Tickets are sold at the Ceremonial office weekdays 9 to 5 and Saturdays 9 to 12. Ceremonial dates are August 11 to 14.
A fire Saturday afternoon caused an estimated 60 in damage to a house at 814% E Aztec when a rug placed over a floor furnace caught fire. A fire department spokesman noted flooring near the furnace was damaged.
District Court Judge Caswell Neal urged reforms after a jury acquitted a suspended state policeman in a bribery case tied to the justice of the peace court. John Tixier faced charges in the wake of Lorenzo Duran pleading guilty in a related matter.
Fifteen New Mexico Boy Scouts and their leader were rescued by an Air Force helicopter after spending two days marooned on a Mexican ranch near Boquillas. Floods swept away rafts on the Rio Grande during a 55 mile trip, but the group survived on higher ground then were aided by Mexican nationals and Border Patrol aircraft before returning to Hobbs.
The two month old son of Mr and Mrs Malachi Bert of 9204 W Maloney apparently suffocated in a blanket this morning. The infant's body was taken to Rollie Mortuary for disposition and investigation.
The Gallup forecast calls for fair weather through Tuesday with scattered afternoon clouds and little temperature change. Expect a high near 85 and a low around 44, matching yesterday's 83 high and 41 low.
Federal judge delays contempt of Congress trial for Ku Klux Klan imperial wizard Robert M. Shelton until Sept 12 after his attorney says the case cannot be tried in one week. If convicted he faces a fine up to 1000 dollars and a year in prison.
In Santa Barbara California a 20000 acre brush and pine fire roars in Los Padres National Forest near the coast. About 1500 firefighters fight hand to hand with wind from the east complicating operations as eight aircraft drop retardant and helicopters airlift crews. Two airmen at Vandenberg Air Force Base were killed in a crash near the fire.
About 100 Zuni firefighters left their pueblo by bus to aid battle a 20,000 acre blaze in Los Padres National Forest. Ron Henderson and R. D. Allen of the Gallup District joined and the crew flew from Winslow to the fire with more Indian firefighters scheduled to depart Albuquerque for the line.
In Bombay suburb two suburban trains collided with over 1,500 passengers aboard each. At least 52 bodies were counted and 106 injured as firemen, doctors, and police worked through wreckage. The disaster, near Matunga Station, disrupts Mumbai rail traffic in the worst western India rail crash on record.
In Enid Mississippi teams of Negro workers push voter registration along U S 51 toward Grenada with a goal of twenty miles by nightfall. Dr Martin Luther King Jr rejoined briefly and warned against turning the march into a publicity stunt while civil rights leaders prepare for Jackson and June 26.
Police said a Puerto Rican youth Cruz Arcelis, 20, was shot after allegedly pulling a gun. More than 1,000 rioters looted, vandalized, and set police cars ablaze near Damen and Division as officers faced rock and bottle attacks. Dozens jailed, injuries reported, crowds dispersed with canine squads.
Police were alerted to several thefts and a defrauding case. A battery valued at 20 dollars was stolen from a car at the Ramada Inn. A jack worth 16.95 dollars was taken from a pickup at Ninth and Maloney. Jimmie Barney, 32, of Tohatchi, faces petit larceny charges for a rake worth 3 dollars from All States Court tool shed. Bill Holmers of El Reposo Restaurant reported three Job Corps members at Mexican Springs left without paying a Sunday meal.
