CYBOLA NATIONAL FOREST weathered the first week of closure with a single fire on Lee Ranch property. Erik Sleeper, fire information officer, said checkpoints are being set up as officials monitor conditions amid historic drought and a blaze-caused year.
Wells Fargo Bank executives presented a 2500 dollar donation to Literacy Volunteers of America Cibola County. County Executive Director Marie Gallegos cited local literacy needs including a 47 percent rate of residents 25 or older without a high school diploma and a high school dropout rate between 46 and 48 percent. The program funds books and materials to boost reading writing and English speaking, aiding 300 students since 1986. The Sept 5 1964 Gallup Independent printed the paper s first story about a Navajo returning to the reservation to work for then chairman Raymond Nakai. The piece by AP outlined Peter MacDonald later jailed on bribery and conspiracy charges, marking a new era for the paper and its readers.
Cedar Unified School District voters on the Navajo and Hopi reservations head to the polls September 12 to decide a request to spend more than 500000 in maintenance and operations. If approved, the money will not raise taxes. if defeated, funds remain in limbo until another override election.
