McKinley County Democrats Gird For McCarthy Challenge

A Saturday 7:30 p.m. precinct meeting invites all Gallup Democrats to Cathedral Grade School cafeteria as McKinley County Democrats for McCarthy seek grassroots interest amid a potentially successful challenge to the county organization. Officials note both parties face a shortage of candidates for local offices while county investments in U.S. Savings Bonds rise to 308 878 since January, up from the prior year.

Three Injured in I 40 Broadside Crash Near Gallup

A 1968 Volkswagen sustained heavy passenger side damage when hit broadside by a 1968 American-made car on Interstate 40 east of Gallup Tuesday night. The two Volkswagen occupants Lana Gessford 21 Georgia Iowa and John R Otti 22 Alimotas Calif were treated at St Mary's Hospital in Gallup and listed in good condition. Dennis Grass 22 Shiprock driver of the second car was treated at Public Health Service Hospital in Gallup and released after being cited for driving while intoxicated no driver's license and driving on the wrong side of the road. The crash occurred as the lead car attempted to move from the south side of the east bound lane to the west bound lane and struck the east bound car broadside. Police were assisted by Sgt Frank Gonzales and patrolman Harry Shay. Sterling Star Ambulance transported the injured. A four year old boy burned at Fort Wingate Trailer Park Tuesday afternoon remained in fair condition at Rehoboth Christian Hospital. Mike Lucero 4 entered an unlocked gate into a fenced transformer enclosure and suffered second and third degree burns to hands arms chest and stomach. Transformers are city property supplying power to the trailer park. The incident occurred around 4 45 p m Tuesday. The boy was taken to hospital by Sterling Star Ambulance.

U S protests latest Viet Cong rocket attacks in Saigon

In Paris the United States and North Vietnam met as U S Ambassador Harriman prepared a strong protest against Viet Cong rocket attacks on Saigon. He said there is no military justification for these terrorist acts and would protest to envoy Xuan Thuy, with no talk of retaliation. Le Duy Tho attended the talks as a member of the North Vietnamese politburo.

A plan to add 80 to 150 mobile home units for occupancy by September 30, 1968 was tabled for a week. Dean Middleton of the Gallup Public Housing Authority presented a crash program funded from federal and other sources to create a mobile home park on permanent sites. Mayor Edward Munoz urged a return next week with a decision as 340 applicants await housing while 80 units under current programs face delays.

Seley Joins Independent Advertising Staff at Gallup

Rob Seley of Coffeville Kansas joined the Independent's advertising staff this morning as advertising manager Norman Van Liew announced. Seley brings seven years of experience from papers including the Coffeville Journal Angenworth Times Leavenworth Bonner Springs El Dorado and Salina Journals. He started his career after graduating from Ponca City High in 1954 and is moving with his wife Lana to Gallup while awaiting housing setup for Public Housing Authority occupancy.

McKinley County Democrats Face Tough McCarthy Challenge

McKinley County Democrats prepare for the New Mexico Democratic Party convention in Santa Fe on June 29. A six member M-Carthy delegation was chosen at a county courthouse meeting last month with more delegations to follow. Eleanor Jalfe, county coordinator for the McCarthy group, says the county party has not followed instructions to meet and select delegates, and notes rising McCarthy support after Kennedy’s assassination. Registered Democrats will vote on June 15 at 7:30 p.m. for the statewide delegation.

Nixon Gains Illinois and South Carolina Delegates in Primaries

Associated Press reports Nixon won at least 27 of 48 Illinois delegate seats while Humphrey took at least 3 and McCarthy at least one in Democratic contests. In South Carolina, many incumbents were renominated as Nixon favored by GOP delegates. Barratt O'Hara lost to Abner Mikva. Dirksen secured renomination for a fourth term.

Ky Quits Post In South Vietnam Leader Role

Vice President Nguyen Cao Ky resigned today as head of South Vietnam's People's Self Defense Committee. The move follows Ky's week of nonparticipation in government work and near total seclusion in Nha Trang. The self defense committee aims to arm and train neighborhood and village groups against the Viet Cong. Ky had led it since May 3.
