A five year old Socorro boy’s death in Arizona highlights the danger of children wandering during camping trips. Parents must keep sight of youngsters to prevent rapid disappearances and avoid grief during holidays.
Samuel Benavidez and Juan Valdez challenge Santa Fe jail procedures after being arrested June 2 by four officers in State Police uniforms and plain clothes. State Police say 18 people were arrested on warrants by District Attorney Alfonso Sanchez in connection with meetings of the Confederation of Free City States at Coyote. Valdez secured release after posting cash bonds. Benavidez remained jailed until Sunday, then released on bond. Warrants charged unlawful assembly.
An unidentified Anglo man was found dead about 3 a.m. on the overpass at the port of entry on U S 66. State Policeman Eddie Castillo said the body was mangled after being hit by a train. Two identifications were found, from Essex Virginia and Bakersfield California, and an autopsy was set for today. Officer Castillo was assisted by Sgt. Frank Gonzales of the Gallup Police Department.
Dist Atty Sanchez says he will keep Reies Tijerina and several followers jailed without bond until trial after the raid on the Rio Arriba County Courthouse. Tijerina faces kidnapping and assault with intent to murder charges. two officers were wounded and hostages taken. The case involves land grant claims and possible transfer to Las Vegas district court.
Hattye Blankenship 66, longtime Gallup schoolteacher, died Saturday in Venice Florida. Funeral will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Holding Eines Home in Big Stone Gap. Born August 17 1900 in Big Stone Gap she moved to Gallup in 1937 taught until 1965 retirement then relocated to Venice. She belonged to multiple groups including the Gallup Mckinley County Education Association Hall of Fame and Epison Sigma. She is survived by four sisters Golden Boardman Alma Boardman Lola Jenkins Linnie Blankenship and a brother George Blankenship.
Two men were injured, not seriously, in a traffic accident on U.S. 66 one and a half miles west of the port of entry at 11:27 p.m. Sunday. William Deroin, 47, and Richard Carey, 28, were admitted to St. Mary's hospital for observation and chest injuries, after Deroin's car was rear ended while parked on the highway. Officer Eddie Castillo cited Deroin for parking on the highway.
A 20-year-old Army private from Albuquerque Joseph C. Garcia was convicted of rape in the slaying of a 20-year-old Vietnamese peasant girl and sentenced to 15 years at hard labor. Maj. Gen. Tolson of the 1st Air Cavalry Division approved the sentence. Two other men were convicted of murder in the case.
More than 400 people rioted in central Tampa Negro slums after a patrolman shot and killed a 19 year old burglary suspect. The clash burned a block of white owned stores, injured about a dozen, and led Gov. Claude Kirk to visit the scene as National Guardsmen patrolled.
A two week workshop on teaching English as a second language began today at Wingate High School. Approximately 240 principals teacher supervisors and teachers from the Navajo reservation attended. Thirty films of 30 minute duration will be shown. The films show ESL taught in classrooms and were made at Rock Point and Wingate elementary schools.
AP reports U S pilots destroyed or damaged about 10 MIG jets on the ground at and around the Kep railroad yards near Hanoi the weekend. The tally brings total MIG losses to roughly 115 as U S forces press air campaigns in North Vietnam.
Firemen answered two calls Sunday and found no damage. The first, at 2 p.m. behind the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Co. on State Road 32, was a brush fire started by children playing with matches. 300 gallons of water were used and crews worked 30 minutes. The second blaze at 403 South Puerco involved a fence board burning. cause unknown.

Five year old Danny Greenwood vanished on Mt Baldy while camping with his father and brother in Socorro New Mexico. A three day search by posse members located his body near the summit 20 feet from a trail. He wore a T shirt blue jeans and boots and carried his new fishing pole.
