City trims bond debt with new issue in Gallup

Gallup voters? no. The city council accepted a bid from Southwest Securities of Albuquerque to purchase and refinance bonds at low rates, aiming to save about $50,000 annually. The 4-0 vote excluded Councilor E Bryan Wall, who opposed the move. Final closing remains.

Area residents plead guilty to DWI in Cibola court plea deals

Three defendants faced plea agreements with the 13th Judicial District Attorney's Office. Roy Barton 42 of Pleasant Hill La received 90 days in jail with 90 suspended, 180 days unsupervised probation, alcohol screening, DWI school, ignition interlock for 12 months, and fines totaling 721 dollars with 500 suspended. Comelius Yazzie 26 of St. Michaels Ariz got 90 days with 90 suspended, 180 days probation, alcohol screening DWI school ignition interlock 13 months, and a 72a total with 300 suspended, plus 24 hours community service and a 100 dollar CrimeStoppers donation. Elray Reano 26 of Santo Domingo Pueblo received time served and supervised probation through the Regional Corrections Center with alcohol screening, OWI education, ignition interlock, and other conditions.

Burglaries Plague Area In Wake of Co Op Break-In

Local deputies report a spate of burglaries in the Gallup area including a June 4 break in at the Navajo Co op on Paradise Lane Thoreau where Michael Estrada 20 found open doors inside items strewn about and a missing computer. Investigations of vandalism at a nearby mobile home and damage to a Stagecoach Cafe in Ramah followed with Irene Lewis reporting a missing purse from her van after a late night.

Fry Bread Demonstration At Navajo Nation Museum

At the Navajo Nation Museum a fry bread demonstration drew about 20 participants in a biweekly cultural program. Education Curator Chag Kruger instructed on mixing and kneading the dough and frying it in oil, noting the skill is essential for Navajo women. Several students traveled from El Paso, Texas, with some tasting fry bread for the first time.

Independent reporter chosen for crime seminar fellowship

Karen Francis, an independent journalist from New York, has been named a fellow to attend the Center on Media Crime and Justice seminar series at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on June 28 26. The program, sponsored by the McCormack Foundation and John Jay College, aims to deepen reporting on crime and justice with support from several universities and Native American journalism groups.
