Melvin Young, a former Department of Emergency Medical Services employee, fights charges of criminal sexual penetration and argues he was unfairly terminated for alleged crimes before trial. He claims Navajo Nation personnel policies and due process were violated when DEMS officials fired him after his Aug. 20 arrest in Gallup.

Bataan Death March survivors gathered at the El Rancho Hotel in Gallup New Mexico for the 43rd annual convention. About 40 to 45 attendees from New Mexico and Texas attended with about 15 Gallup veterans among them. Tom P. Foy of Silver City, a former Battery G 200th Coastal Artillery guard member, spoke of his 42 months in prison camps and later political service. The convention of the Bataan Veterans Organization continued today.

Navajo Nation adopts air quality code after long effort
By Cate Gilles Dine Bureau WINDOW ROCK Navajo Nation approves a comprehensive Air Quality Code after two and a half years of work led by EPA team. The unanimous Resource Committee vote set major polluter regulation aligned with federal Clean Air Act to cut emissions and protect health with input from BHP Minerals Pittsburgh and Midway Coal Enron El Paso Salt River Project and Arizona Public Service. The council will vote in the summer session on the code that caps fees and tightens oversight on facilities emitting over 100 tons annually.

Rural Coalition conference gathers 1000 Navajo and guests
Hundreds of rural groups converge in Window Rock June 14 for the Rural Coalition conference. The event seeks multicultural solutions to rural living challenges across Indigenous and non Indigenous communities, including Canada and Mexico, under the theme One People One Planet Replanting Community on the Land.
