Reservation Indian rights hearing due
A U S Civil Rights Commission hearing on enforcing the Indian Civil Rights Act on the Navajo Reservation will be held in Gallup in late July or August. General Counsel Bill Howard said a four men and one woman team will gather information in the Window Rock area for two weeks. The team will base at the Gallup Inn and invite residents to share civil rights concerns. The Navajo Tribe says it was unaware of the commission’s plan until recently and calls the inquiry intrusive. Howard defended the process as proper and said investigators will focus on press freedom related to the February closing of the Navajo Times Today newspaper.

Zuni Tribe Wins Land Claim in U S Claims Court

Dredging and dike plan eyed for Puerco project
A U.S. Army Corps of Engineers rep says dredging and dike building for the Puerco could start next summer with the federal government covering three quarters of the cost. Gallup may finance $1.8 million with general obligation bonds, contingent on a city bond election approved by voters. In 1983 the city raised $2 million for water wells, and a runway extension measure failed about a decade ago. Tribe seeks back rent in Klagetoh post sale
Navajo Advisory Committee considered selling Jane Yellowhorse Jones’s interest in the Klagetoh Trading Post to Thriftway Marketing Corp with the caveat that back rent, reported between 6,000 and 60,000 dollars for 1981 to 1986, be placed in escrow.
