Eastburn Picked as 11th District Judge in New Mexico

Benjamin S. Eastburn, 42, of Farmington, was named to the 11th judicial district to replace retiring Judge James Musgrove. Eastburn will base in San Juan County, has a Tulane JD (1970), admitted to NM Bar in 1971, and has taught at San Juan College. He is a private practitioner and former campaign coordinator for Jan Hartke.

A New Mexico district court ruled the City of Gallup acted properly in denying a liquor license transfer for Thriftway Marketing Corp. The suit challenged a second October public hearing held after Thriftway claimed lack of notice. Protests grew at the second session as opponents cited concerns for public health safety and morals.

Lions Club hosts jubilee week at Gallup rodeo

The 35th Annual Gallup Lions Club Rodeo and Western Jubilee Week runs Wednesday through Saturday June 18. Doctor turns two year IHS hitch into career

Dr Bruce Tempest joined Indian Health Services in 1967 at Tuba City on the Navajo Reservation. He later moved to Gallup Indian Medical Center in 1970 and this year was named the national IHS outstanding clinician for 1989. He helped reduce tuberculosis cases and developed a pneumonia vaccine that cut illness among Indians. Tempest chose IHS over military service, valuing systemwide care and public health impact. He recalls culture shock at Tuba City and notes Navajo traditions remain strong there.
