The Tohatchi High School dedication in New Mexico started an hour late as officials waited for guest speaker Will Rogers Jr. who did not arrive. Navajo chairman Raymond Nakai filled in, stressing education and urging support from teachers and parents for the new Gallup McKinley County district high school on the Navajo reservation with vocational and homemaking tracks and college preparatory courses.

The Associated Press reports weekend activity as New Mexico Republicans finalize 14 delegates for the June state convention and August national convention in Miami Beach. Mary Beth Harris joins the secretary of state race against Louise Bundy. on the Democratic side, Jack Love resigns as U S attorney to seek attorney general, joined by James A. Maloney and Gerald Goodman in the August 27 primary.

Rockefeller Returns to Campaign in Meadville Speech

Tucker Resigns Post in Party

Ken Tucker, McKinley County Republican Party chairman since 1961, resigned at the county convention citing lack of time. His resignation takes effect June 1 and he was recently elected district Kiwanis governor. Perry Walter Wolf and Mrs Leland Pape were named to nominate a new county chairman. Thirty two delegates to the state Republican convention were named.

Ray signals fight against U.S. extradition in Bow Street hearing

James Earl Ray appeared in Bow Street Court and indicated he would contest extradition for the slaying of Martin Luther King Jr. The judge ordered him held without bail for a June 18 appearance, as American officials planned to proceed with extradition. Ray asked for court appointment of counsel, signaling a fight to be returned to the United States.

Air Crash Victims Walk to Hospital

A Pasadena couple missing since Saturday for a Grand Junction to Grand Canyon flight walked into a Grand Junction hospital Sunday. Pilot Russell Shatuck said their single engine craft crashed on the Pinon Mesa 15 miles southwest of Grand Junction after takeoff. The pair stayed with the aircraft overnight as Shatuck attempted radio messages that could only be received.

Youth Caught After Chase Near Fort Wingate

Gallup police arrested 17 year old Raymond Williams of Fort Wingate after a high speed chase reaching 90 mph from Denny's Restaurant area to Fort Wingate. Williams was booked for reckless driving curfew violation and failing to stop for an emergency vehicle. Separate vandalism incidents reported involved BB gun damage to two cars including a 1968 model owned by Mrs. George Landrey. Police seek a suspect in the second incident.

Mary Gard Wins Miss New Mexico Universe Title

Nineteen year old Mary Gard crowned Miss New Mexico Universe in Las Cruces and to represent the state in next year’s Miss U S A portion. Gard, 5 foot 9, 36 23 36, is a rancher’s daughter from Union County and plans to pursue agriculture business. She is a student at New Mexico State University shifting from pre veterinary studies to order buying and selling.
