Navajo activist Benally to address sovereignty rally in D C

Louise Benally of the Sovereign Dineh Nation plans to speak at a Washington rally protesting erosion of tribal sovereignty. She cites water rights, the 1996 Navajo Hopi Settlement Act, and Peabody Coal’s Black Mesa impact as central issues for Native Nations and hopes federal leaders hear their concerns.

RMCH Hospital adds 60,000 square-foot expansion plan

RMCH Hospital's 60,000 square-foot addition targets an ER on the first floor and ICU on the third, with the second floor left shelled. ICU beds rise from 4 to 8, ER from 6 to 12, lab size tripled. Construction began last August, expected finish this fall, with mixed progress reports from RMCH leadership.

Native Appreciation Day Braved Rainy Native Festivities

Torrents of cold rain and mud did not dampen the Tenth Annual Native American Day at Ellis Tanner's. Families in galoshes and raincoats enjoyed Navajo tacos and frybread while tents leaked. The Tiny Miss Contest featured toddlers in turquoise accessories, judged on hair jewelry and dress as dancers and riders performed. See Native, Page 2.

Sky City students vie in field day at Sky City Community School

Sky City Community School held its field day with first through sixth graders in events like long jump and sprints while middle schoolers helped time and record. A lane mix up by Corallyn Miller went unnoticed. The day ended with a cookout and gym competitions including pantyhose and jelly bean races and tug of war.

Laguna students try on other cultures at Expo

Christian Oberholser reports Laguna Elementary School held the second annual Social Studies Expo with flags from Canada, Australia, and India. Students studied a country, built dioramas, made family shields from Ireland, and designed jewelry while parents visited to view displays and sample foods.
