Gov. Toney Anaya signaled conditional support after the Legislative Finance Committee endorsed his plan to close the gap between general fund income and authorized expenditures, prompting plans for a special session later this month to tackle the state financial crisis.

Police report an early Sunday assault at Round Up Saloon in Gallup left Navajo, N.M., man Wilson Wauneka injured. Diana Billy of Tohatchi, 26, was booked for aggravated assault after witnesses said she struck Wauneka with a beer bottle. Nearby, Marjorie Ashley and McKeever Curley were involved in a separate street incident leading to Curley’s arrest on multiple charges after a traffic stop and warrant check.
Navajo businessman Larry Manuelito became the seventh candidate to enter the 1986 chairman race.
