Gallup McKinley district to boost English learning plan

The Gallup McKinley County Schools agreed to a 24 page settlement with the U S Department of Education Office for Civil Rights to strengthen Limited English Proficiency support. The plan aims to identify and provide targeted teaching aid for students with limited English skills at all grade levels and sets deadlines including hiring a compliance officer and an ESL bilingual resource specialist by June 20. The agreement was approved by the board on May 20 and plans for the June 17 meeting to consider approving two new administrators.

Ceremonial picks new plan for Wednesday night preview

GALLUP The Ceremonial Association held its regular meeting Wednesday night and voted to replace the Wednesday night preview barbecue with a new hors d oeuvres reception to cut costs Attendance had declined annually and the association considered raising admission to cover catering costs Board member Joe Caretto warned that without a plan they could be in money trouble in two years Plans for the 75th Diamond Anniversary Ceremonial were said to be well in hand and income will be donated to the foundation until July 2 when state status is lost The Eastern Navajo Senior Rodeo Association requested a rodeo on Tuesday August 6 and was approved Volunteers are still needed for the exhibit hall Contact the Ceremonial office at 863 3896 for details See Ceremonial nixes Page 2

Mixed reports on Black Mesa mining Ey review board role

The Navajo Nation Council and Resources Committee discuss the Peabody Western Coal Company mining at Black Mesa, the review board’s authority, and its quarterly reporting duties. Peabody mines 4.5 million tons in Black Mesa yearly, delivering about 40 to 45 million in royalties and tribal taxes to Hopi and Navajo communities.

Eagle rank reached in Zuni Mountain District

McKinle Sayid Cibola counties report more Eagles as local Boy Scouts gain milestone. Dan Champany, district chairman, notes Eagle status requires 21 merit badges and a major service project of at least 100 hours benefiting the community. The Zuni Mountain District says 253 volunteers contributed 1,852 hours on service projects last year as part of a move to empower the review board.

6400 Acres Burned Near Lupton Fire Rages in Navajo Nation

A fast spreading fire burned over 6400 acres four miles south of Allenstown Navajo Nation. Residents reported smoke visible from Window Rock and Holbrook as 140 traffic lanes were halted. Firefighters battled the blaze amid drought linked emergency and a possible lightning strike. A separate investigation concerns a 59 year old man found dead on Tsaya to Road with a hit and run suspect unnamed.
