Narbona Pass Name Change Official in Navajo Nation

Eastern Bureau report: Narbona Pass, formerly Washington Pass on New Mexico State Road 134, is now the official name after Freda Garnanez led a four year campaign. The Navajo leader Narbona, who helped negotiate peace with U.S. authorities, was killed in 1849 during a dispute with Col. Mackay Washington. The name change aims to correct what the tribe calls a racist misnaming and honors Narbona’s legacy. Page 2.
