In Gallup a Utah bound Navajo custody dispute unfolds as the Ryan family fears the Navajo Tribe will challenge their eight year old adopted daughter. The Carter Halloway case in Window Rock tests the Indian Child Welfare Act and tribal sovereignty while the Ryans face possible removal of their daughter.
In Polacca Arizona 19 month old Marjore Alice Honyemptewa becomes a legal adoptee of Clara and Benson Honyemptewa after a months long custody process. The Hopi couple pursued adoption after years of childlessness with the baby moving from home to home before finding a steady family. Marjore belongs to the Corn clan and reads the Hopi Book with her mother.
In a courtroom at Window Rock Arizona Tribal Judge Calvin Nazzie will decide whether 10 year old Michael Carter remains with his adoptive parents Pat and Dan Carter of Spanish Fork or returns to his biological mother Cecilia Saunders. The Carters say they cannot afford further legal fights and describe Michael as wanting to stay with them despite Saunders relinquishing parental rights in 1980 after the boy, born Jeremiah Holloway, faced health and mistreatment concerns. Cherokee chief Wilma Mankiller, 41, seeks re election June 20 as the first woman to lead a major American Indian group. She runs amid a record registration and an all male slate, while women gain ground in tribal government across the Cherokee Nation and other tribes like Isleta Pueblo and Navajo Nation.
The House Interior Appropriations Subcommittee approved 5.6 million for the Navajo Indian Irrigation Project for FY1988, a 600000 increase, pending Senate approval. The funds would expand water delivery to about 55,000 acres now and an estimated 110,000 acres upon completion, creating construction jobs and boosting local food production. Navajo Chairman Peter MacDonald praised the move but called 5.6 million disappointing for community college funding and potential expansion plans at Continental Divide.
Delfin J. Lovato, former All Indian Pueblo Council chairman, faces a three count federal indictment for converting more than 46 000 dollars of federal funds to his own use. He allegedly embezzled 41 667 from a council contract and misused 5 000 for the Santa Fe Indian School Foundation around May 7 1985 while giving false statements to a DOI auditor.
A special meeting of the Gallup City Council is set for 1:00 PM in the Council Chamber at 10 W. Aztec. The agenda includes city capital improvement projects and a closed session on personnel matters. Rose Lena Chavez is the City Clerk.
