North Valley Homecoming Celebrates Rebuilt Homes

North Valley residents gather under umbrellas and hymn books to mark their return after a three year absence. A reblessing ceremony honors family and community harmony as Navajo Housing Authority rebuilt the 20 homes from the ground up after asbestos and structural damage forced relocation to Standing Rock. The project cost over $1 million and most units are paid for, with residents covering utilities.

Heinz Hitch show visits Red Rock with eight Percheron horses

The Heinz Hitch show halted at Red Rock State Park as eight 2 200 pound Percheron horses rested overnight. John Dryer of Heinz U S A explained the team travels across the United States and Canada performing at fairs and rodeos pulling a restored 140 year old Studebaker wagon. The team’s visit echoes Heinz appeals from the turn of the century when the company used hundreds of draft horses to haul goods.

Navajo Nation Declares Drought Emergency

WINDOW ROCK The Navajo Nation Council declared a state of emergency for a prolonged drought reddening the reservation into desert. Delegates viewed stark photos of cattle dead and parched landscape as officials warned the drought will extend for years and urged immediate aid from state, federal governments, and private sources.

County meeting taped in Gallup sparks funding row

McKinley County Commissioner Ben Shelly suggested layoffs by race during an unadvertised May 29 meeting captured on tape. Shelly said he would cut jobs rather than fund travel expenses, while criticizing the county employees union. The county plans 10 layoffs next week and will not fill 14 vacancies, with a 10 percent budget cut across departments.

Navajo Nation Council approves funds for drought relief and aid

The Navajo Nation Council approved 700000 for emergency drought relief and distributed over 2 million in supplementary appropriations. The Public Employment Program will receive 951000, funding local jobs, Headstart buses, and police vehicles. Additional allocations support Capital Improvement projects and the Economic Development Committee, with plans to buy Headstart buses, police cars, and fire trucks.

Mystery cash flow haunts Zuni merchant in parking lot loss

Roger Thomas, manager of Zuni Shopping Center in Halona Plaza, recalls leaving a bag on top of his car after a bank visit. He believes a substantial sum of cash was inside, confirmed by bank video.
