Navajo Tribal Chairman Peter MacDonald discusses the severe overgrazing on the 25 000 square mile Navajo Reservation. He cites welfare risk and tribal trauma from 1930s programs, and considers feedlots and subsidies as paths to reduce livestock while preserving livelihoods.
Tribal leaders say they will not arrest Navajo patrons at Vanderwagen Village or Smith Lake bars as part of a broader effort against liquor sales. Peter MacDonald reports focus on legislative action and law changes to prosecute all sellers in Navajo Indian Country while policing remains strained.
U S Attorney Mike Hawkins said he was unaware of past refusals to prosecute drug cases on the Arizona portion of the Navajo Reservation.
