First Hopi graduation marks new beginning at Hopi High
In Polacca Arizona 30 Hopi seniors received the first Hopi high school diplomas as Gov. Evan Mecham urged the graduates to excel. Hopi Chairman Ivan Sidney called the ceremony a beginning for Hopi education and independence noting the move from boarding schools to the Bureau of Indian Affairs junior senior high school and stressing pride land and self-reliance.

Nicaraguan village attack hits aid workers tied to dairy project
Van Diepen, a 32 year old American who worked on an artificial insemination project in Nicaragua, learns of the Guanacaste village attack a month after the assault. Two Nicaraguan men he knew were killed by Contra insurgents and four were wounded. The village near Matagalpa endured destruction to houses, barracks and equipment while the milk barn stayed intact.
