Edward Junker, 62, Gallup mayor for just over four years, died of heart failure at home. The Painted Cliffs Safety Rest Area on westbound I 40 near Lupton in Apache County is now open. Built by The Astiton Company Inc. of Tucson at a cost of 1.3 million dollars, the facility aims to serve about 2,100 daily users with ramadas, restrooms, water, lighting, parking, picnic areas, and a caretaker residence. Camping is prohibited in all Arizona rest areas.
GALLUP The Gallup McKinley County School board approves emergency repairs at Thoreau High School to fix a weak 22 foot wall and rotting roof bracing. The district will select a competent engineer and contractor without bidding to speed work before the next school year.
Gallup reports a Nebraska man Kerby Joe Osborne aged 22 waived arraignment in district court on kidnapping and aggravated assault counts. He pleads not guilty to holding a Goodyear Tire Store manager hostage at knifepoint for over an hour at the 307 West Coal Ave. store on May 4. In a separate case Carl Bybee 34 of Wichita Kansas pleaded not guilty to three fraud counts and one conspiracy count for loan nonpayment tied to Mid States Construction and Freedom Homes in Gallup. He was arraigned before District Judge Louis De Pauli and released on his own recognizance.
Joseph Baca of East Pershing was hospitalized after his car left U.S. 66 west of Ford and struck a light pole possibly during a seizure. Police seek two suspects in a failed car theft at Hawaiian Trailer Park. Theft of clothing from Aaronson Brothers is under investigation. Police report 15 arrests and $4 in custody since Monday. Also an ad for White Water Riding Stable near Gallup.
