Kennedy Shot During California Primary Ambush
Sen Robert F Kennedy was shot in the head after winning the California Democratic presidential primary. He underwent more than three hours of surgery and was in extremely critical condition. A gunman, described as a 25- to 6-foot-6, 129-pound Caucasian with a dark hat, opened fire in the Ambassador Hotel kitchen, wounding Kennedy and five bystanders. Police detained the suspected shooter for questioning. Kennedy’s press secretary said vital signs were in good order but the next 14 to 36 hours would be critical.

The Los Angeles Police Department identified additional Kennedy shooting victims as William Weisel 30 of Washington DC who suffered a left abdomen wound and was taken to Kaiser Hospital and Ira Goldstein 19 of Los Angeles who received a left hip wound and was taken to Encino Hospital. Elizabeth Evans of Saugus California was wounded by a glancing bullet at the hairline.

Gallup Council Studies Sidewalk Mandate Resolution
The Gallup city council is studying a proposed sidewalk mandate requiring many property owners to install sidewalks. The measure was discussed Tuesday, with adoption delayed after Mayor Edward Munoz noted some central streets lack sidewalks yet are not listed. The plan would notify owners by certified mail or posting, grant 15 days to begin work or file objections, and allow a council hearing if objections exist.

Cash Transfer Extension Okayed by Gallup City Council
A 60 day extension on a 130000 cash transfer from the joint utility income fund to the library construction fund was adopted. The council approved earlier Department of Finance and Administration authorization March 27 for up to 90 days. The panel discussed funding rail facilities with a sales tax revenue bond for both projects. Fire at Lincoln Street lumber stack put out by firefighters
Firemen were called to 107 E Lincoln at 3 05 p m Tuesday to extinguish a fire in a lumber stack near a house owned by Evan Hurnil Estown. A fire department spokesman said the blaze, caused by children with matches, caused damage estimated at 50 dollars.

Three Juveniles Booked for Vandalism at Sunnyside School
Three juveniles from John F. Kennedy Junior High were booked for vandalism after four windows at Sunnyside Elementary were smashed Monday. The windows measured about 20 by 40 inches. Detected by Detective John Jaramillo, the youths, all students, claimed they were just messing around. The suspects are Tommy Aragon 14 of 411 E Pershing Richard Luna 13 of 225 E Pershing and Richard Mora 13 of 503 N Grandview. They were released to their parents. In a separate report Paul Sidney of Polacca Arizona said a wallet containing about 200 dollars was stolen in front of a bar at First and Coal by an unknown man. Police also noted hydrants left running on the South side of Gallup during the night near Red Rock and Nictioni behind John F Kennedy Junior High.
