Navajo council to meet UNM regents over minority services
Navajo Nation Education Committee plans a June 9 meeting with the University of New Mexico Board of Regents to oppose UNM administration plans to reorganize minority student services centers and to seek support for their amended resolution. President Peck said the reorganization is delayed for one year and director contracts will be extended for the 1993 fiscal year. President Peterson Zah criticized the move, saying it threats heritage and language identity.

EMTs hired for Thoreau after fatal choking incident
Two full time EMTs David Martin and Brian Mansfield began in Thoreau on emergency appointment pending state law process. A third EMT will be added June 30 to cover vacations and illnesses. The hiring followed the choking death of a 2 year old grandson of Martha Shelly who could not obtain help. Calls to the Thoreau sheriff substation are now answered by the Gallup office when staff is off duty. Around 100 residents previously protested for restored emergency services and Navajo Nation support is being sought through Commissioner Plummer with a meeting planned for mid next week.

$1.2 Million Highway 666 Lighting Project Nears Completion
A $1.2 million lighting project along U.S. Highway 666 near Gallup and the Navajo Reservation has been installed ahead of schedule and should be operational by month’s end. The plan adds 268 fixtures with solar sensors to illuminate eight miles from Gallup to Yah-Ta-Hey.
