General James Abdner survived a political shootout in the South Dakota Badlands as a moderate congressman from northern California outpaced conservative rivals from the southern state region to clinch the Republican nomination.
The Canby Minnesota public schools face growing troubles tied to the collapsing agriculture economy. Districts across the region report funding strain, teacher turnover, and program cuts as farmers struggle, signaling broader impacts on education.

Powell trails with about 18 percent and vows to stay in race.
In Cibola County primaries Democrat Virginia G. Baca won county assessor with 1515 votes while Republican Wilbur G. Thigpen led the GOP ticket. Eddie L. Craig captured the sheriff post. U.S. House support favored Bill Richardson over David Cargo, with Casey Luna and Marjorie See winning lieutenant governor and related races.
Area voters followed New Mexico trends with Garvey Carruthers winning both statewide and in McKinley County for governor. Unofficial returns list Carruthers at 380 votes to Mercer 278 and Bond 328 among Republicans, while Ray Powell led Democrats with 3,471. In lieutenant governor race, Marjorie Bell Chambers led GOP voters 536 to 429 for Jack Stahl.
San Juan County voters backed Garrey Carruthers for governor with 54 percent and helped Marjorie Bell Chambers win the Republican lieutenant governor nomination.
