Clearing trend forecast for state in today’s edition

The forecast shows a clearing trend across the state with warmer highs after a cold start. Yesterday’s peak reached 74 degrees at 2 p.m. and the low dipped to 36 degrees at 4:30 a.m., recorded by the Gallup Independent office at 500 N. Ninth St.

Regional income gains seen for Rocky Mountain Southwest

The U S Commerce Department projects over the next 15 years the Rocky Mountain region and the Southwest will have the largest personal income increases. Smaller rises are forecast for the Great Lakes and Mideast regions according to the May Survey of Current Business.

Bankrupt Savings Loans Rise Fivefold Since 1981

The number of savings and loan associations that are effectively bankrupt but remain open has increased fivefold since 1981, now over 400. Industry leaders and regulators expect most will be forced to close or merge, with details on page 14.

BIA backs Navajo welfare audit findings on 1982 83

WINDOW ROCK Ariz The Bureau of Indian Affairs agrees with a federal Inspector General audit that faulted the Navajo Nation Division of Social Welfare for numerous deficiencies. The May 7 response notes many corrections have been made and outlines steps still needed. The audit urged recovery of more than 550000 in disallowed Senior Companion expenditures, a waiver sought by the tribe, and ongoing efforts to enforce eligibility rules for general assistance.

Duus resigns post with women's office

Gloria Bitus founder of the Office of Navajo Women announces the resignation of Mrs. Duus, effective June 10, with Duane Reyal seeking a temporary replacement. Duus led the office since 1983 and helped secure funds and a reservation-wide women’s commission to advise on policies affecting Navajo women.

The court held that the 1938 Indian Mineral Leasing Act bars states from taxing mineral royalty income from leases issued after 1938, a ruling affecting Montana and the Blackfeet Tribe. Thoreau Board Approves Water Sale For Construction Use

The Thoreau Water and Sanitation District board approved selling about 3 million gallons of fresh water at $2.50 per thousand to contractors for the N M 67 overpass project this summer. Lack of jury may delay McCabe trial

Meeting set to consider squatter issue

Albuquerque awaits an all day session on Wednesday to address Navajo squatters on federal land northeast of Crownpoint. The BLM plans to lease the land for coal development this year and will urge its Albuquerque District Advisory Council to decide how to handle about 50 Navajo families living there allegedly illegally for generations. A 10 a.m. meeting in the Seventh Floor Conference Room will feature a joint presentation by BLM Navajo Tribe and BIA officials on a proposed cooperative agreement to ease issues from unauthorized occupancy on public lands in northwest New Mexico.
