Navajos Kiowas Dominate All Indian Pow Wow Dance Winners

Frank Shepard reports the 4th annual All Indian Jays Pow Wow at the National Guard Armory over Memorial Day weekend drew 121 dancers in 12 categories, with total prizes around $3000. Rudy Bob and Rudy Shebola led men’s divisions. Ramona Roach and Melanie Mathews topped women’s categories. juniors and children also claimed titles, while various head staff and drum groups supported the event.

Gallup approves runway extension plan at Gallup Municipal Airport

Gallup City Council gave the Airport Commission permission to extend the runway by about 1,500 feet at the Gallup Municipal Airport with land purchases west of the current strip. The project, estimated at 3 million dollars, would share costs 5 percent each from federal and state agencies, with the city using roughly 50 thousand dollars now and about 47 thousand more in reserve.

Navajo Nation to gain $27 million for road projects this year

Navajo Tribe will receive about $27 million for road construction this year from the federal Highway Trust Fund. Twelve projects are planned across routes in the Western and Eastern Navajo Agencies, including paving, overlays, grading, drain work, and two bridge replacements near Farmington and Leupp.

State and tribe clash over jurisdiction in hunting case

Albuquerque AP Attorney General Paul Bardacke says New Mexico should not have sued the Mescalero Apache over jurisdiction of non Indians hunting and fishing on the reservation.
