Mayor Edward Junker dies at 62 in Gallup home
Gallup Mayor Edward Junker died this morning at his home on Linda Drive reportedly from heart failure. He, 62, had recently undergone surgery in Albuquerque and returned to Gallup Thursday night. Autopsy set for Tuesday. City Council must appoint a successor by July 5 to serve the remainder of his term through April 1981. Junker, a lifelong local, held multiple public offices, was World War II veteran, POW survivor, and active in civic groups. Survivors include his wife Cecilia and three sons, four daughters, mother, sister, and seven grandchildren. Funeral services pending.

Gulf files water discharge plan for Mount Taylor mill
Gulf Mineral Resources submits a water discharge plan for the Mt. Taylor Uranium Mill Project. A six mile tailings pipeline will move 1400 gallons per minute of contaminated liquid and solids to an unlined tailings pond covering about 500 acres, kept under water to curb radon and wind. When mining ends, water drains and tailings are buried six feet under overburden. A lined containment basin will also be built to handle spills and runoff. groundwater is deep along the route, project cost cited at 140 million dollars with a 25 to 30 year operation and an estimated 100 million pounds of U3O8. The EID also received a discharge plan for Sunnyside Trailer Park in Gallup for 5000 gallons of domestic sewage through four septic tanks to a beachfield.
