A three day Bureau of Indian Affairs seminar begins at Wingate to present Navajo agency policies. The Eastern Navajo Agency hosts the event for BIA Public Health Navajo Nation Office of Navajo Economic Opportunity and related agencies.
A large delegation linked to the Office of Economic Opportunity pressed a school board to hire a teacher not meeting certification, risking the 1968 Head Start program serving over 500 local children. The board insists on following state regulations, while OEO cites regional and national rules. confrontation ends with a county board concession and continuation of the program on page eight.
Four Gallup people, in good condition at St Marys Hospital, were hurt in a two car crash at Eighth and Green at 12 14 this morning. Victims include James Vincent 17 Evelyn Madrid 20 Georgiana Madrid 1 and were involved in a collision between Larry Dorman 22 and the Madrids car. Dorman was cited for speeding and failure to yield right of way.

In a special Monday meeting the Ceremonial directors voted unanimously to relocate the Inter-Tribal Ceremonial to the Red Rocks area east of Gallup extending from the hogback to Kit Carson Cave road north of I-40. A petition with 67 names urged delaying or abandoning the plan and questioned the year round, commercial use and location near Gallup.
Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce directors meeting was canceled by President Joe DiGregorio after a half hour wait for a quorum. Executive Manager Harvey Whitehill said it was the first time in two years only six of twelve directors were present. A new meeting is set for June 10 to address the heavy agenda including the election of a president elect.
Dispute between the Gallup McKinley County school system and the regional Economic Opportunity Office stalls the McKinley County Head Start for a fourth year. CEO officials refuse to sign operating funds, citing conscience and governance, while the school board defends its authority and rules.
A Santa Fe citizens committee formed to push constitutional revision in New Mexico aims to place a call for a constitutional convention on the November general election ballot. The group including 25 civic and professional members appointed Dr. Herbert Hughes as chairman and set two subcommittees to meet July 22 in Albuquerque. Governor Cargo says the current Constitution limits government and the effort faces voter persuasion challenges. Members of the Constitutional Revision Commission noted concerns about concentration of influence and who would rewrite the document, with Rankin of the NM Cattle Growers Association voicing worries over a one person one vote scenario and regional control, particularly by Bernalillo County.
The District Court jury trial of a $181,454 case against Dr C W Keney began Monday. Allan R Rhodes alleges severe and permanent injuries from treatment of a gun shot wound in his upper left leg, claiming failure to use reasonable care in cleaning the wound on Aug 29 1965 and injury during an operation on Sept 21 1965.
The Associated Press reports a major showdown between Senators Robert F Kennedy and Eugene McCarthy in California with delegate races in New Jersey and South Dakota. Nixon returns to New York as Rockefeller predicts GOP victory while a National Committee subcommittee meets in Portland to plan the Miami Beach convention. Reagan leads California as a favorite son contender.
Polls show Kennedy favored to win the Democratic nomination while a Los Angeles Times survey suggests undecided voters could sway the outcome. In South Dakota backers push a Humphrey delegate slate pledged to President Johnson, with Humphrey born in the state and Johnson on the ballot.
A 17 year old Gallup youth James Griego was picked up Monday in connection with the May 9 burglary of Lincoln Elementary School. A complaint charging breaking and entering was filed by Detective John Jaramillo. Entry was gained by breaking a window and a paper cutter valued at 10.75 dollars was missing. In other police news Patrolman Ernest Montano reported Garnet Summers of Phoenix received two lacerations breaking a door at St. Mary's Hospital to gain entry for his ill wife. Summers agreed to pay hospital damages.
