Gallup spellers fall in National Spelling Bee
In Washington D C three New Mexico contestants were eliminated in early rounds. Hannah Gomez 13 from Gallup misspelled trypanosomiasis in round one. Kyle L Trijillo 9 from Tuba City misspelled sousaphone in round two. Erin Abreu 14 from Las Vegas and William Dunn 14 from Clovis exited in round three with laureateship and eiderdown respectively.

Millennium powwow slated for New Millennium
Diné Bureau reports Fred Linder has spent decades studying powwows and helped form the National Native American Cooperative. Synder plans a Tucson area powwow from December 31 to January 9, drawing over 100 tribes to celebrate the new millennium at Rillito Raceways. Sponsors hope to raise up to 50,000 per day with Thunder in the Desert pledges of 1,500 daily.

The Navajo Nation Tuba City Chapter released The Tuba City Focused Future Strategic Plan for Economic Development in May 1998 detailing two-tier business activity, a vision of leaders blending elders and youth, and a goal of becoming a hub for education and advanced healthcare while stressing culture, environment, and sovereignty. Gallup hosts the 1999 Marion Jayne Air Race at Gallup Municipal Airport running through June 10.
