Felix Begay edged incumbent Frank Gonzales by a slim margin in the McKinley County Sheriff Democratic primary, becoming the first challenger to defeat Gonzales. Begay, a former three term sheriff, will face Republican Mike Lannon in November. Other county races saw Silversmith win magistrate and Soland, Griego, and Sanders win Democratic nods in magistrate divisions. Jackson and Bowman-Muskett win county commissioner seats. Preliminary counts reported on page 5.
Debbie Eriacho a Northern Arizona University graduate student recalls viewing the 1868 treaty re enactment as Navajo Nation kicks off its first ever annual Treaty Day celebration. The event runs Tuesday to Sunday with carnival games junior rodeo PRCA rodeo and a gourd dance fireworks concert and various dances. Activities include a 1968 treaty reenactment reunion powwow and traditional games such as tug of war wood chopping and a fruit scramble.
Gallup police seek a man who robbed Pinnacle Bank inside a Walmart store around 10:45 am. The robber presented a note demanding all money from the currency drawer to a teller. no weapon was shown, and the suspect fled the scene.
In Gallup the McKinley County Commission agreed to act as fiscal agent for Thoreau area residents who formed a group following several teen suicides in the past two months. Lisa King of the Thoreau Community Intervention Team said the group collaborates with the Navajo Nation, Indian Health Service and New Mexico to obtain funding for intervention efforts.
Sempra Generation pulls back after three years and $2 million in exploratory work with Cameron Chapter on a proposed 900 megawatt wind farm on Gray Mountains. Navajo Nation discussions with IPP and others continue, with lease terms and ownership shares debated amid political resistance and shifting support from tribal leaders and Resources Committee.
