Navajo work force may be trimmed in October
The Navajo Nation plans to reveal how many workers may be laid off starting Oct. 1 by month end. The Budget and Finance Committee approved 43 programs for budgets April 1999 to March 2000, with oversight hearings set for each agency. The nation employs more than 6,100 people across executive legislative and judicial branches, with debates over potential layoffs continuing.

Tragedy ends family outing at Bluewater Lake
Memorial Day drowning near Bluewater Lake left Ruben Candelaria 20 of San Rafael dead after leaping from an inner tube while his friend Miguel Rodriguez 23 of Grants tried to assist. Rodriquez yelled for help as Manuel Candelaria Sr. and Jr. swam to shore attempting to pull him in. The older Candelaria family member called 911 as the tube remained a hazard. The sheriff notes alcohol reportedly influenced the events.

State replaces some bad dirt along Route 66
A 30 foot section of contaminated soil at a former Route 66 gas station is being removed and replaced with clean dirt. The project, funded by 400000 from the Corrective Action Clean Up Fund, aims to finish in about two weeks to be ready for tourist season.
