Democrats give sheriff's nod to Padilla

Unofficial primary results in McKinley County show incumbent Benny Padilla winning the Democratic sheriff race with 3,293 votes. Earl Dunkin led Republicans with 726. District 1 Democrat Russell King defeated Jack Baker, 2,488 to 1,618, and County Manager Gloria Howes won the District 3 Democratic post.

Cibola County voters cast ballots for state and local races

Cibola County voters participated in major party primaries with Toney Anaya leading Democrats for governor and John Irick edging Sego in the GOP. In U S Senate, Jerry Apodaca defeated Bingaman by 534 votes in the county, while Jeff Bingaman led statewide. County results show Richardson, Mondragon, Perez and Udall leads in District 3 Democratic race. Chambers and Jordan contended in Republican race. and party nominations for other state posts reflected varied local support.

San Juan County races redraw shift in five districts

In Farmington based on redistricting San Juan County voters elected candidates for five district commissions while incumbents led sheriff and county posts. Democratic competition was limited in clerk treasurer and assessor races with Republicans prevailing in several slots. Voter turnout was about 19 percent of 27,374 eligible voters.
