Land Commission swamped by money requests
The Navajo- Hopi Land Commission has 2.5 million dollars to award from the Navajo Rehabilitation Trust Fund but has received 55 applications totaling more than 15.6 million dollars. Applications come from the commission office, 22 chapters, seven Navajo Nation programs, and four other entities. Independent readers will rank proposals ahead of a commission vote planned for later this month or early next month. The plan aims to award about 17 grants averaging 100 000 to 150 000 dollars to improve economic education and social conditions in the Bennett Freeze Area Navajo Partitioned Lands Hopi Partitioned Lands and New Lands Chapter. Grants focus on land purchases development housing education and government facilities including health care.

Drowning at Bluewater Lake Claims Candelaria
A 20 year old Cibola County man Ruben Candelaria drowned Sunday at Bluewater Lake during a Memorial Day family outing. Deputies were unavailable for comment but Undersheriff Johnny Rodriguez confirmed the incident occurred around 3 pm after Candelaria, on an inner tube being pulled by a boat, dove to assist his brother who fell in. the brother scaled back aboard the tube while rescue efforts followed.

Tribe probes profit drive for Navajo enterprises

Local girl dies amid hantavirus coverage fear and rumors
This is the second of a four part series on a reported hantavirus case. Kimberly Bartlett, 13, collapsed at Red Rock State Park on May 28, 1993, amid reports of a deadly new disease. Health officials had notified the CDC of an outbreak days earlier and the Albuquerque Journal reported a mystery flu killing Navajos in the Four Corners area. Kimberly was treated at Rehoboth-McKinley Christian Hospital then airlifted to University of New Mexico Hospital under strict isolation and quarantine.
