Navajo water costs far exceed suburban use in region
A Navajo Nation report finds Navajo households spend nearly 37 times more per acre foot on water than nearby suburbs. It links high costs and limited infrastructure to poverty, health risks, and escalating future demand, projecting a sixfold need for system capacity by 2040.
Navajo Nation faces deep poverty and water access gaps
Gallup statistics released Monday show Navajo median family income at 11 885 in 1997 while U S family income stands at 30 000. Navajo per capita income under 5 600 vs Arizona about 22 000. Over half of Navajo families live below federal poverty levels. unemployment at 58 percent compared to 5 percent nationwide. More than 50 percent lack complete kitchens and 40 percent rely on water hauling. Sanitation adequacy correlates with medical service needs, and water hauling costs reach 22 000 per acre foot versus 600 for suburban users. Regional projects will ease some water access, but about 40 percent will still depend on other sources and rehabilitation or new systems are needed. Burger King Safe Theft Reported at Santa Fe
Burger King employees reported a theft of an unknown sum from a safe after a break in likely through the drive through window.
