Former University of New Mexico basketball coach Norm Ellenberger was found guilty on 21 counts of fraud and placed on a year of unsupervised probation by the judge. The plea and sentencing mark a sharp turn in the case affecting his career and reputation within New Mexico sports circles.
Gallup city fire department inspectors scour backyards and alleys for fire and safety hazards including high weeds, abandoned vehicles, and trash heaps. Inspectors will issue one warning before possible court summons. fines have been issued as cooperation lags.

Henry Keen Thompson, 28, to pay restitution and seek alcoholism treatment after a six month suspended sentence for tampering with a motor vehicle. David Hoskie, 32, with burglary charges, sentencing deferred for 60 days for diagnostic evaluation at the state penitentiary.
West Virginia officials welcome Interior Department proposals to loosen federal surface mining rules. If adopted states could craft own regulations meeting their needs while still complying with the act. The plan preserves key requirements but allows state flexibility in program design and approval.
Gallup police search for three men after a baseball bat attack on a 19 year old man near his home Tuesday night. The victim reported two attackers to Rito Martinez of 1411 Romero Circle, suffering no apparent injuries. Police also report two men arrested after hubcaps were attempted to be removed from a city motel car early today. David Shaw of Rio Rancho, 29, and Matthew Kirsten, 25, of Albuquerque, were detained. In other incidents, three windows at Gallup Middle School gym were found broken early today but no entry was gained.
Gallup City Council approved a January 1 increase of the sales tax to 4.25 cents per dollar, moving from 4 cents, and enacted a $25 annual business registration fee as part of a shift away from the former occupation tax. Also approved were master downtown redevelopment studies with MACOG and grants totaling 64,000, plus a postponed Gamerco electricity supply proposal and a criminal code outline for future discussion.
