McKinley County planners warn water in a drought basin is slipping from conscious use. Despite a yearlong MACOG education program lowering per account water use 9 percent since March, residents remain careless. Tips include short showers, water-saving devices, drip irrigation, desert landscaping, and checking for leaks.
City official Jim Morrison says a three year $750000 HUD block grant will fund rehabilitation in Gallup including homes water and sewer upgrades in Chihuahuita area and sidewalk overlay. Construction costs total about $210000 first year $200000 second $230000 third, enabling 13 homes yearly and eight relocation units.
Anzac Transportation Co of Gallup filed suit in Albuquerque federal court charging Navajo Transit Authority with operating beyond its permit, running charter services and misusing buses to trips outside reservation routes. The suit seeks a preliminary injunction to curb noncompliant operations and prevent charter service. The Navajo Tribe oversees the authority which serves Fort Defiance Window Rock Gallup Tuba City Ganado Crownpoint and Shiprock area.
The City Council will weigh a sales tax increase from 4.00 to 4.25 percent starting Jan 1 1982 and repeal of the occupation tax at a 5 p.m. special meeting. A $25 annual business registration tax is set to start, while the state shares shift no net loss expected. Also on the agenda downtown revitalization and Gamerco electric facilities request.
Police and a city code compliance officer seized fireworks valued at over 150 dollars from Smith's Foodway on Monday afternoon. The ordinance bans fireworks sales after midnight on July 4. Inspectors will continue checks for violations today. Police later questioned a Lock Haven, Pennsylvania, pilot who flew an airplane low over West 66th Avenue residences, explaining he was testing oil issues in the heat before landing at the municipal airport.
Washington analysts report wholesale food prices turn up in June, lifting the overall inflation rate to an annual 6.9 percent at the wholesale level. A Gallup woman, Dorothy Tipton, remains in serious condition at St. Joseph's Hospital in Albuquerque after a head-on collision four miles west of Grants on Interstate 40. The crash also killed 42 year old Chicayo resident Melcory Fernandez and seriously injured Abraham Bachindonny.
