Navajo Nation President Kelsey Begaye reports fuel excise tax income of 2.1 million dollars in two months, surpassing the 8 to 10 million annual projection. Tax revenue to fund infrastructure, with a vendor challenge pending. Nation’s total assets exceed 1.76 billion. On-bond legislation noted.
The Navajo Nation Intergovernmental Relations Committee blocks approving grants amid a funding dispute with the state over administrative costs. A state report flags over 20 million in projects from capital outlay that remain unfinished or unused, including senior centers, buses, health facilities, Head Start gear, roads, and water systems. The Navajo Nation swore in its 88th delegate Frank Chee Willeto during the winter session. Appointed by Speaker Edward Begay on Jan. 18, Willeto serves interim duty for Pueblo Pintado and Torreon Star Lake chapters until the election to fill the remaining term of the late Harry Jackson. Willeto, a former Navajo Nation vice president, is among the surviving Navajo Code Talkers who served in World War II and later worked in BIA divisions and boarding school service.
Gallup McKinley County Schools will save about 20000 by launching a local School Bus Driver Institute run by district officials. The district will stop sending drivers to Silver City for classes, reducing tuition travel and lodging costs from about 40000 to 20000 for 32 hours of instruction for 80 drivers. Superintendent Robert Gomez may attend a Native American education conference in Anchorage. Gloria Johnston and the JOM committee figures into attendance and funding debates. Roosevelt Elementary and Church Rock face state-imposed improvement plans after testing showed science gaps in grades four and five and LEP program issues. a board report and strategy are due mid March.

Adoptive parents from Santa Monica joined the event as he reflects on his birth on December 17, 1971 and past top finishes in Canadian events.
