Chinle center to become juvenile jail on Navajo Nation
The Public Safety Committee reluctantly agrees to open a new 9.5 million Central Navajo Youth Corrections Center in Chinle for short term detention of juveniles. Some members prefer long term rehabilitation, but federal authorities must approve any shift. The 48 bed medium security facility currently serves as a short-term juvenile hall on Route 7 awaiting authorization.

Man sentenced for child sexual abuse in Gallup
Roel Lee Lahi, 27, was sentenced to 15 years and eight months in federal prison for aggravated sexual abuse of a minor. He must five years supervised release, comply with sex offender registration, and avoid contact with anyone under 18. The acts occurred on Zuni Pueblo between July 1, 1994, and Jan 31, 1998, involving two victims under 12. An FBI probe followed reports to the pueblo.
