Navajo Code Talkers Seek Medal of Honor Recognition
Vets urge Congress to award the Medal of Honor to Navajo Code Talkers, whose WWII Marine signal corps units created unbreakable codes. The 80 attendees, including four widows or descendants, heard how their networks aided Iwo Jima and other Pacific battles. Begay and Bodie pressed for memorial honors and highway name changes in New Mexico and Arizona.

Shiprock steps closer to RV park
Shiprock while negotiations with an Albuquerque contractor on environmental studies near the San Juan River could resume soon. The Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency pressed the EPA for funds to complete the park studies, with completion possible in two to three weeks if cleanup is not required. If cleanup is needed the park could be delayed months or years. The project began last May as a joint Navajo Nation and Shiprock Economic Development Committee effort. During utility line excavations workers found vials bottles and powders possibly from an old Bureau of Indian Affairs hospital. See Shiprock steps closer page 2.

Three Navajo criminal code versions in spotlight
Nation Council moves to third attempt in a year to adopt a revised Navajo law and order code for the reservation. The Ethics and Rules Committee set an agenda for the Jan 24 winter session, including three versions from PSC, Public Safety, and other panels and items on gifts rules and the Olympics coordination. The debate centers on repealing adultery and polygamy crimes and adding non-traditional gaming, amid broader amendments and recognitions for local groups and events.
