The Navajo Nation Supreme Court ruled tribal courts have jurisdiction over who gets life insurance benefits for Lucinda Ruth MacDonald, reversing Shiprock Family Court. The suit, filed by MacDonald’s estate and her daughter Elizabeth Benally, sought to block husband Tom Ellison from collecting policy proceeds after their 1994 divorce and MacDonald’s 1995 death.
