A 20 year old Dennis Lucas held two teenage boys, 14 and 16, hostage in Newport Kentucky after a gunfire standoff began around 5 a.m. Sunday. Police described a tense hour long dialogue with Lucas who demanded fifty thousand dollars and three plane tickets to England. Lucas boasted of killings to a Cincinnati radio station but no direct killings were confirmed. A body later recovered in the Licking River near Newport was identified as 15 year old James Cain of Covington, stabbed multiple times. SWAT teams surrounded the house and residents were evacuated as authorities sought a peaceful resolution.
Washington AP reports a batch of year end tax breaks will expire at midnight Tuesday as Congress adjourns. Provisions include energy savings credits for storm doors vanpool deductions and research and development credits for businesses. House and Senate negotiators differed on extensions, with a final measure signed December 23 preserving a cigarette tax but dropping other auto-expiring provisions. House leader Dan Rostenkowski urged retroactive R D credits when the new session starts.
A Utah bound Cessna 210 crashed five miles south of Salt Lake City killing six aboard while en route from Ontario California for a ski trip. Witnesses described a low flight and sputtering engine as FAA probes the scene. In Seattle a single engine Mooney 231 struck a power line and hillside on Interstate 5, killing four. A Maryland student pilot crashed near Winfield, seriously injuring himself and hitting a house.
