Zuni Pueblo will inaugurate newly elected governor Zuni Panteah and his running mate Chauncey Simplicto Friday morning between 10 30 and 11 outside on the main plaza if weather permits. Panteah defeated incumbent Gov Robert Lewis in the December 9 election for a four year term. The new tribal council will include Sefferino Eriacho Sr Roger Tsabetsaye Harry Chimoni Rita Enote Lorenzo Lowell Panteah and Charles Hustito.
The Bisti region tract near Crownpoint, NM, totaling 3968 acres, was reinstated as a Wilderness Study Area after Interior Secretary Watt had moved it from protection. BLM NM officials say reinstatement follows FLPMA case by case rules while awaiting final environmental review and possible permanent wilderness designation.
The Navajo Tribal Council approved scrapping the 1979 luxury retirement plan and adopted a deferred compensation option for leaving officials. The plan allows withdrawing funds after leaving office or delaying until age 60, with a new formula using 3 percent and oversight by the full council.
A three month consulting contract signed November 4 by Navajo Tribe leader Peter MacDonald and James Nahkai ends January 11 covering $36,155 for Cahn to advise the chairman and council on self government and land dispute analysis. Shiprock police report Harrison Bryant, 24, died after a fight near a residence five miles west of the Sheep Springs trading post on S.R. 34. Roy Bennally, 40, of Sheep Springs, was arrested for questioning. Bryant’s body sent for autopsy at UNM. BIA and Navajo police probe the stabbing and a separate December beating in Chinle near the Navajo Tribe Utility Authority.

WINDOW ROCK The Navajo Tribal Council approved an eleven day extension to the George Vlassis contract to Jan 11 when Peterson Zah takes office. The committee will reconvene Monday.
Gallup and McKinley agencies will close Friday for New Year’s. Central Office of the School District is closed and classes resume Monday. Emergency care at Gallup Indian Medical Center will be available Friday but mail delivery is uncertain with limited post office hours. The Independent will publish only New Year’s Day edition Monday with both morning and city news.
