Theodore R Mitchell was unanimously chosen by the ONEO executive board as director of the Navajo Economic Opportunity Legal Aid and Defender Society. The appointment faced objections from tribal nominees, Mitchell plans a three month planning period for a 17 lawyer program to provide legal aid to Navajos. Mitchell is a Harvard Law School graduate with prior Navajo Tribal Legal Aid and Southwest regional legal services experience in Austin Texas.
Chinese Foreign Minister Chen Yi praised the cultural revolution purge at a Peking rally of about 100000 Red Guards and supporters. He lauded Mao Tse tung and Lin Piao though neither leader attended, while Premier Chou En Lai was present but silent amid broad praise and earlier criticism from the Red Guards.

Richard Chung Chin Lee, 33, Reseda California, was injured when his car spun on icy pavement on Interstate 40 and struck a stranded car belonging to Sam Alfred Fultz, 49, Tulsa Oklahoma, about four miles east of Gallup. Fultz and his wife Edith were uninjured. Also unharmed were Angelina Lee 31 Lora Lee 4 Bernadette Lee 1 and Matthew Lee 2 months. State Police Officer Wilfred Sanchez said Lee had head injuries and a possible ankle fracture but no citation was issued.
Harry L Golden aged 64 remained in critical condition at Charlotte Memorial Hospital after gall bladder surgery. A hospital spokesman said he is holding his own and is guardedly hopeful for recovery as he no longer needs a mechanical respirator for breathing.
On the eve of a New Year truce in South Vietnam, small-scale fighting erupted in the Mekong Delta and central lowlands. U S air raids targeted North Vietnamese supply areas while five thousand dockworkers in Saigon planned to resume work amid a negotiated settlement ending a general strike.
Detroit AP reports a widening public policy rift between AFL-CIO officials and its largest affiliate the United Auto Workers. The UAW sharply criticizes the federation for clinging to the status quo and questions whether the union remains aligned with merger aims. An inside source says no withdrawal plan exists, but tensions push disagreements into the open.
Santa Fe grand jury probing the Highway Department went into holiday recess after hearing Gov. Campbell testify. District Attorney Alfonso Sanchez would not reveal if new indictments were issued before the break. Former High five engineer Robert DeLaRue was ready to testify but not called. Burris reported a department land sale at a loss in the Belen area.
One hundred student leaders from across the United States sent an open letter to President Johnson questioning U S goals in Vietnam. The letter warned that without easing the conflict many young people could refuse military service. The signers from church and nonsectarian schools urged frank discussion and proposed questions on U S interests, negotiation terms, and the Vietnam Cong. The group suggested a de facto restraint and extending the New Year truce, if possible. The letter grew from a National Student Association debate at Illinois and a subsequent campus rump meeting that raised funds to mail the letter nationwide.

Gallup man Joe M. Silva 43 entered an innocent plea to charges he gave or sold liquor to two teenage girls. He was released on his own recognizance as a preliminary hearing was pending. The two girls aged 4 and 13 were picked up by police for drinking as minors and curfew violations. In a separate report Edgar Paul Lineberry of Princeton West Virginia was hospitalized after a three inch facial wound from a fall at the Greyhound Bus Depot.
