State tribal clash over mine reclamation jurisdiction

Gov Bruce King and Navajo officials dispute whether New Mexico may regulate coal surface mining within the Navajo Reservation. McKinley County youngest in New Mexico census data

Statewide median age is 27.4 with McKinley at 22 and San Juan at 24.2. Sierra County records the highest median age at 49 due to retirees. Housing values show Los Alamos highest at 77,000 while Harding County remains lowest at 10,600. Valencia and Cibola could not be broken out.

Two men sentenced in Wendell Merrill death

Two men faced sentencing in district court over the death of former McKinley County Sheriff Wendell Merrill in a June crash near Gallup. David Lee pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide while DUI and drew 18 months with a 60 day minimum, plus city-jail start January 4 and two years probation. Jerry Thompson pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide and received 90 days in city jail with a $100 fine, suspended, and 90 days probation. He drove the second vehicle. Lee drove a southbound truck that passed a second truck on the shoulder, forcing Merrill’s vehicle into its path.

Mexican Springs woman hurt in fall from pickup

A Mexican Springs resident Janet Barney, 27, was pushed from a pickup near Fifth Street in Gallup Saturday night. She complained of leg and back injuries, was treated at the scene by EMS, then taken to Gallup Indian Medical Center and later released. Barney did not identify the driver or describe the vehicle.
