Nelson Wauneka and Edison Wauneka warn Navajo Nation faces a harsh winter with an empty budget. The Department of Emergency Management has an $89,000 operating budget, lacking funds for broad community aid despite 1995 96 drought and prior 350,000 spent on emergency relief. Chapters depend on 1996 allocations.
Hale says environmentalists plan to sue Mohave Generation Station for air pollution and force scrubbers. The plant supplies 40 000 tons of emissions yearly and is key to the Navajo economy, with 15 percent of the tribe’s general funds, 350 mining jobs, and 69 million dollars in economic impact annually. A Lake Powell pipeline is proposed to replace groundwater used for the slurry coal supply. The Hopi need the pipeline for settlement approval.
In the Navajo Nation, a spate of fatal crashes spoiled the holidays. Dianne Verito 31 of Nag e ezi and Elouise Charley 24 of Beclabito died in a two women killed one-vehicle crash near Crown Point. Charles Smith 30 of Gallup and Nellie Price 61 of Fort Defiance died in a head on collision near Kinlichee. Michael Price 13 survived after ejecting from the blue pickup. A small amount of marijuana found on Smith was sent for identification. Officer Edward Cadman 48 of Navajo was injured in a Dec 12 accident that killed a child. See Accidents, page 2.
Gallup McKinley County officials say juvenile crime is not higher than state averages and violent crime is generally below elsewhere. Yet a Thoreau High School student stabbed a teacher December 17, prompting warnings on school weapons and campus security without resorting to fortresslike measures.
Gallup firefighters collected about 2000 dollars to aid retired Fire Capt. Floyd Reyes, facing chronic lymphocytic leukemia and requiring a bone marrow transplant. The fundraiser included a boot drive and plans for dances and food sales. Reyes, diagnosed in 1993, endures frequent transfusions and is awaiting blood donations and a costly transplant not covered by insurance.
